How to back up Perplexity Spaces (now Projects)
On July 30, 2026 Perplexity renamed Spaces to Projects. Existing Spaces migrated automatically, threads and files included. There is still no built-in "back up this Project" button, so here is a manual routine.
1. Copy the Project instructions
Open the Project, open its settings (See all settings or the Configure project icon in the newer layout), and paste the instructions into a text file. They're short and easy to forget.
2. Keep your original files
Files you uploaded to a Project live in Perplexity's cloud. Keep originals in your own folder or cloud drive. Perplexity notes that files attached to ordinary threads are kept for 30 days by default.
3. Export each thread
- Open a thread in the Project.
- Use the Export option (three dots menu) and choose PDF, Markdown, or DOCX.
- Save it into a local folder named after the Project.
Repeat for each thread. Doing it this way keeps the Project-as-folder structure on your own disk.
4. Request a full data export
For an account-wide copy, contact support (Help, then Contact Support) and ask for an export of your data. You'll get raw data rather than tidy documents, but it is a complete safety net.
Why bother?
In June 2026 many users on r/perplexity_ai reported Spaces and history temporarily vanishing after forced sign-outs. Most of it came back, but an offline copy means you never have to wait and hope.
