How to export Perplexity threads to Markdown, citations included (2026)

Perplexity can export a thread as a .md file natively. It's free and works well for a handful of threads. Here's the full manual method, plus how to keep the sources usable.

1. Export one thread as Markdown

  1. Open the thread on perplexity.ai (desktop browser).
  2. Click the three dots to the left of Share, top right.
  3. Choose Export as Markdown. A .md file downloads.

2. Check the citations

The export keeps numbered citation markers and the source links. Open the file in any Markdown editor and confirm the reference list at the bottom resolves. If a long Deep Research answer looks truncated, export it again after it has fully finished generating.

3. Copy a single answer instead

For just one answer, use the copy button under it and paste into a new .md file. You get the answer text in Markdown; follow-up suggestions are not included.

4. Name and file it

Rename the download to something descriptive (for example 2026-10-market-sizing.md) and keep everything in one research folder. Prefix numbers if one topic spans several threads so they sort in order.

5. Many threads?

The native export is one thread at a time, and some users report it being rate limited. For dozens or hundreds of threads, repeat steps 1–4 in batches, or use a bulk tool (open-source userscripts and CLIs exist on GitHub if you're comfortable running them).

Want Markdown for every thread, not one at a time? ThreadVault (disclosure: we make it) is a browser extension in pre-launch that bulk-exports your Perplexity threads to Obsidian-ready Markdown plus JSON in one ZIP. It runs locally in your browser, so your chats never touch our servers. $9 one-time. Perplexity export works today; ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini support is coming soon.
