Back up your Perplexity library before deleting threads (2026)

Perplexity lets you delete single threads, whole Spaces/Projects, or everything via Library → three dots → Delete all threads. Perplexity states this cannot be undone. Back up first.

1. Request your data export

Start Perplexity's self-serve data export from your account settings so a full copy is on its way while you do the rest.

2. Export the threads you'll want again

Open each important thread → three dots (left of Share) → Export as Markdown (or PDF/DOCX). Save into a dated folder such as perplexity-backup-2026-10/.

3. Save Project/Space instructions and files

Copy each Project's instructions into a text file and make sure you still have your original uploaded files. See backing up Spaces (Projects).

4. Verify the backup

Open a few files and check the answers and source links are intact. Only then delete.

5. Delete

Want a one-click backup before you clean up? ThreadVault (disclosure: we make it) is a browser extension in pre-launch that bulk-exports your Perplexity threads to Obsidian-ready Markdown plus JSON in one ZIP. It runs locally in your browser, so your chats never touch our servers. $9 one-time. Perplexity export works today; ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini support is coming soon.
