How to save a ChatGPT chat as a PDF (2026)

As of October 2026 ChatGPT has no built-in "Save as PDF" option for a conversation. These free methods work today.

1. Print to PDF (one chat, free)

  1. Open the chat on chatgpt.com in a desktop browser.
  2. Scroll from the top to the bottom so every message loads.
  3. Press Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+P (Mac).
  4. Set the destination to Save as PDF, turn on Background graphics if code blocks look blank, and save.

Long chats can split awkwardly across pages, and the sidebar may print too. Collapsing the sidebar first helps.

2. From the official export (many chats)

  1. Request your data: Settings → Data controls → Export data → Confirm export. The link expires 24 hours after it arrives.
  2. Open chat.html from the ZIP in your browser and print it to PDF. That gives one big PDF of everything.
  3. For one PDF per chat, first convert conversations.json to Markdown, then export each note to PDF from Obsidian, Typora or any Markdown editor.

3. Copy into a document

Use the copy button under a response, paste into Google Docs or Word, and use File → Download → PDF. Slow, but you control exactly what goes in.

Which to use

Want every chat exported at once? ThreadVault (disclosure: we make it) is a Chrome extension that bulk-exports your AI chats to Obsidian-ready Markdown plus JSON in one ZIP, processed locally in your browser. It is not on the Chrome Web Store yet: the Perplexity version is built, and ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini support is coming in version 1.1. $19 one-time for all four AI tools, with a $9 founding price for the first 50 buyers.
