Claude or ChatGPT account locked or suspended: how to get your chats out (2026)

Losing access to an AI account is stressful when months of work live in its chat history. The good news is that both Anthropic and OpenAI give you a way to request your data even when the account is restricted. Here is what each company's help pages say.

Claude: account banned or suspended

  1. Go to claude.ai and sign in with the banned account. Anthropic says Free, Pro, Max and Ultra users can still sign in after a ban.
  2. The restricted-account screen shows your options next to the appeal form, including exporting your data and deleting your account. You do not need to contact Anthropic to export.
  3. Request the export. Claude emails a download link to your account address. You must be signed in to download it, and the link expires after 24 hours (you can request a new one).

Note: Anthropic says the data a banned user can export "may be restricted" depending on the policy violation. Exports cannot be started from the iOS or Android apps, so use the web or desktop app.

To appeal: while signed in to the banned account, fill out the appeal form linked from Anthropic's Safeguards warnings and appeals page. You must be logged in to reach it.

If your organization is on hold (your own account is fine but a Team or Enterprise workspace was paused), the restricted screen lists it with a Request a review button.

ChatGPT: account deactivated or you cannot sign in

ChatGPT's in-app export only works while you are signed in. If you cannot sign in, OpenAI says to use the Privacy Portal instead:

  1. Go to the OpenAI Privacy Portal.
  2. Select Make a Privacy Request → I have a consumer ChatGPT account.
  3. Select Download my data and follow the instructions. You may need to verify that you own the account, so have access to its email inbox or phone number.

To appeal a deactivation: use the link in the deactivation email. If you cannot reach that email, OpenAI points to an appeal intake form, and if you never got an email, to the Help Center chat. Include your User ID and Org ID and any relevant context. See Troubleshooting OpenAI account deactivation.

If the account was suspended for suspicious activity (a possible compromise), OpenAI recommends changing your password and rotating any API keys.

Business, Enterprise and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces do not have self-serve export. Your workspace owner controls the data.

Before it happens: back up while you still have access

Back up before you need to. ThreadVault (disclosure: we make it) is a Chrome extension that bulk-exports your AI chats to Obsidian-ready Markdown plus JSON, processed locally in your browser. It is not on the Chrome Web Store yet: the Perplexity version is built, and ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini support is coming in version 1.1. One honest caveat: ThreadVault reads chats through your signed-in browser, so it cannot help once you are locked out. It is for keeping a copy beforehand. $19 one-time for all four AI tools, with a $9 founding price for the first 50 buyers, and a free version that exports up to 25 threads.
