ChatGPT chat history missing or deleted? What you can recover, and how to back it up (2026)

If a ChatGPT conversation has vanished from your sidebar, it is often not gone. It may be archived, locked, or saved under a different account. But if it was deleted, OpenAI says it cannot be restored, not in ChatGPT and not by OpenAI Support. Check the places below first, then set up a backup so it does not happen again.

1. Check whether the chat is really gone

  1. Search for it. Older chats drop out of the visible sidebar but are still there. Use Search with a word or phrase from the conversation. Search covers chat titles and messages, including archived chats.
  2. Look in Archived chats. Open Settings → Data controls → Archived chats (on some devices it says View archived chats or Manage). Select Unarchive to put a chat back in your history.
  3. Check Locked chats. Locked chats do not show up in regular search. Go to Projects → Locked chats and unlock with your account PIN or device authentication.
  4. Confirm the account and workspace. Make sure you signed in with the same email or sign-in method (Google, Apple, Microsoft, SSO) and the same workspace you used before. A different login means a different, separate history.
  5. Refresh, or sign out and back in. Then check status.openai.com for an incident that could be hiding history.
  6. Request a data export (steps below) to see exactly which chats are still stored on your account.

2. What cannot be recovered

If you still have the browser tab open, copy the text out now before you reload the page.

3. Back up what you still have

  1. On the web, open your profile menu → Settings → Data controls.
  2. Next to Export data, select Export, then Confirm export. (The iOS and Android apps have the same option under Data controls.)
  3. ChatGPT emails you (or texts you, for phone-only accounts) when it is ready. It can take up to 7 days.
  4. Select Download data export. The link expires 24 hours after it arrives, and you need to be signed in to the same account.
  5. Open the ZIP and check that your chats are there. conversations.json holds the full history.

Self-serve export works on Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts. Business and Enterprise workspaces do not have it, so ask your workspace owner. To make the JSON readable, see how to convert conversations.json to Markdown.

4. Make it a habit

Want a readable copy of every chat, not just a JSON dump? ThreadVault (disclosure: we make it) is a Chrome extension that bulk-exports your AI chats to Obsidian-ready Markdown plus JSON, processed locally in your browser. It is not on the Chrome Web Store yet: the Perplexity version is built, and ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini support is coming in version 1.1. $19 one-time for all four AI tools, with a $9 founding price for the first 50 buyers, and a free version that exports up to 25 threads.
