How to Export Jira Comments to CSV or Excel (Including Only the Last Comment)
Short answer: In Jira Cloud, run your search, click Export > Export CSV (all fields). Each comment lands in its own Comment column as date;author account ID;text. There's no built-in "last comment only" option (JRACLOUD-69484 was closed as a duplicate of JRACLOUD-2734, about 800 votes), so for a clean report you either post-process the CSV or keep the latest comment in a field that exports as one column.
1. Export all comments (native)
- Open Filters > Search work items (or a List view) and run your JQL.
- Click Export (top right) > Export CSV (all fields). "Current fields" exports only your visible columns, which usually don't include comments.
- Open the file in Excel or Google Sheets. You'll see Comment, Comment, Comment... one column per comment, oldest first.
What to expect:
- Authors are account IDs, not names (JRACLOUD-75612). Map them with a lookup table from your user export.
- Restricted comments are exported only if you can see them, so the file can contain comments limited to a role. Check before sharing it outside the team.
- Large exports are capped at 1,000 work items per export by default; split by date or project.
- Very long comments can exceed Excel's 32,767-character cell limit and break rows; Google Sheets or a CSV parser handles them better.
2. Keep only the last comment (spreadsheet)
In Google Sheets, with the comment columns in, say, J:Z, the last non-empty one per row is =LOOKUP(2,1/(J2:Z2<>""),J2:Z2) (works in Excel too). Split the result on ; to get date, author and text. Fine for a one-off report, tedious every week.
3. REST API (for scripts)
GET /rest/api/3/issue/{key}/comment?orderBy=-created&maxResults=1 returns the newest comment you can see, in Atlassian Document Format. Loop over a JQL search, then write the CSV yourself. Good for automation, overkill for a weekly status report.
4. Automation: copy the latest comment into a field
Rule on Work item commented > Edit work item: "Last comment" (paragraph field) = {{comment.body}}. The field then exports as one column. Watch out: a plain rule copies restricted comments and JSM internal notes into a field anyone can read (see last comment as a column).
5. A last-comment field that exports cleanly

FAQ
Can Jira export only the last comment? Not natively. Export all fields and take the last Comment column, use the REST API, or export a last-comment field kept up to date by Automation or an app.
Why does the comment author show as a random string? Jira Cloud exports the author's account ID. Atlassian tracks showing names as JRACLOUD-75612.
Are restricted comments included in the CSV? Only if the person exporting can see them. Review the file before sharing it more widely.
Why don't comments appear in my export? "Export CSV (current fields)" only includes visible columns. Use "Export CSV (all fields)".
