How to Show the Last Comment as a Column in Jira Cloud's List View

Short answer: Jira Cloud has no "Last comment" column in the List view (issue navigator) or filter results. The request, JRACLOUD-2734 "Display last comment in issue navigator column", has about 800 votes and is still Gathering Interest. The usual workaround is a custom field that an Automation rule fills with the latest comment; an app can do this more reliably and keep private comments out.

1. Automation + custom field (native workaround)

  1. Create a Paragraph (or short text) custom field called "Last comment" and add it to your projects' screens. Optionally add a date-time field "Last comment date" and a user field "Last commented by".
  2. Automation > Create rule, trigger Work item commented.
  3. Action Edit work item: set Last comment to {{comment.body}}, Last comment date to {{now}}, Last commented by to {{comment.author.accountId}}.
  4. In the List view, choose Configure columns and add the fields.

2. Other options

3. A dedicated last-comment app

Last Comment Fields for Jira (by Loomwise, coming soon) adds three read-only fields, Last comment, Last commented by and Last comment date, that work as list columns, in JQL, filters, dashboards and CSV export. Restricted comments are never copied into the fields, and JSM internal notes are skipped by default. Free for up to 10 users, about $0.35 per user per month above that, billed through Atlassian.

Until it launches, the Automation workaround above is the best free option, as long as you don't use restricted comments.

FAQ

Can Jira Cloud show the last comment in the issue list? Not natively. JRACLOUD-2734 tracks the request. Use an Automation-filled custom field or an app.

Can I export the last comment to CSV? Jira's CSV export includes all comments in separate columns, not just the latest. A last-comment field exports as one clean column.

Will restricted comments show in the column? With a plain Automation rule, yes, which is a privacy risk. Loomwise Last Comment Fields never copies restricted comments and skips JSM internal notes by default.

Does it work in team-managed projects? Custom fields and Automation work in both project types; list columns, JQL and export work in both.
